The Health and Social Care Bill, which contains the legislation to transfer the functions of the GSCC to the Health Professions Council (HPC), completed its progress through the House of Commons in September and received its Second Reading in the House of Lords at the start of October. The Bill is now being reviewed in Committee, where Peers will have the opportunity to propose and debate amendments. There have been a number of proposed amendments to the sections of the Bill relating to the transfer of our functions to the HPC, which include making the registration of social care workers compulsory and opening a register of health care support workers with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The Bill is expected to complete the Committee stage early in the New Year and receive Royal Assent, when it will become law, in the spring.
