Social care employer support is vital

A practical guide to what is expected of employers can be found in the Code of Practice for Social Care Employers. Up until now this code has been voluntary. However, Lord Laming’s latest review of child protection services backed our recommendation that it should be made statutory for all employers of social workers and this has now been accepted by the Government.

We recently wrote to all local authorities to remind them of their responsibilities under the code, including providing support, supervision and training as well as reporting potential cases of misconduct to us. The GSCC and employers need to work in partnership to make sure that only the very best people are working in social work, and that those people are given support to meet the high standards expected of them.

Should training on drug, alcohol and substance misuse:

be included within the core learning of the Social Work Degree?
continue to just be offered within Post Qualifying courses?
