Get the picture with Social Care TV

December 2009
Laptop with Social Care TV on screen

Social Care TV is a new broadband service for everyone involved in the social care sector.

Launched by Care Services Minister Phil Hope in October 09, Social Care TV brings to life the work and lives of people involved in all aspects of social care through a series of films on current social care issues covering adults, children and families. The series of films introduces the big issues of the day, stimulating learning and debate.

Newly qualified social workers, students and potential recruits can get a picture of the real-life situations that they will face in the workplace. The website includes links to other useful resources including SCIE’s own work, other films on Social Care TV, government policy and related organisations. Log on to Social Care TV at www.scie.org.uk/socialcaretv. You will need a broadband connection to view Social Care TV.

I have been a qualified social worker for 25 years and have worked in social care for children's services all that time. I was keen to see how we might be encouraging people to look for a career in childcare and linked on to the social care T.V. What a turn off - to start with a systems approach to case reviews would harldy inspire a potential employee! Come on let's get some real footage of people doing the job not the bureaucrat obsessed quality assurance service that we have succombed to over the last 10 years. There is a time and a place for this but it is hardly the best image to portray to someone who is motivated to assist the most vulnerable children and families in our society! I think I would choose a career in adult services if I was to start again it looks much more akin to the values that I would guess drives most to do the job. Help us out!

Should training on drug, alcohol and substance misuse:

be included within the core learning of the Social Work Degree?
continue to just be offered within Post Qualifying courses?
